Introducing N.F.C. PUNK! — a weekend in October dedicated to celebrating punk and counter-cultural cinema 🤘🎸📌💥
We begin with a film that is not quite New Wave, though heavily inspired by Punk, rebelling against genre and demanding to be seen and heard!. BREAKING GLASS blends every style of the era into a wholly original and unapologetic punk anthem of late 70s London.
Following up BREAKING GLASS we see a portrait of an early 1980s New York City hellscape in SMITHEREENS, where we see young drifters who have been failed by society and the empty promises of the American punk scene.
A quintessential cult film of the 1980s starts our Friday with REPO MAN, Alex Cox’s singular sci-fi comedy stars the always captivating Harry Dean Stanton as a weathered repo man in a desolate Los Angeles, and Emilio Estevez as the nihilistic middle-class punk he takes under his wing.
Following is BURST CITY, an explosive Molotov cocktail of dystopian sci-fi, Mad Max-style biker wars against yakuza gangsters and the police, and riotous performances from members of the real-life Japanese punk bands The Stalin, The Roosters, The Rockers and INU.
Opening the final day of our punk weekend is the Penelope Spheeris classic, SUBURBIA. "... Clear-eyed compassionate melodrama ... A good genre film," says Vincent Canby of The New York Times on SUBURBIA, director Penelope Spheeris’s study of the Los Angeles punk rock scene in the early 1980s.
Starring real-life punks rather than trained actors, and featuring live performances from punk bands D.I., T.S.O.L. and the Vandals, Suburbia is an authentic and compassionate study of the Los Angeles punk rock scene in the early 1980s, and a bleak indictment of the American suburban experiment.
Finally, 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE is set in 70's Manchester where Tony Wilson is an ambitious but frustrated local TV news reporter looking for a way to make his mark. After witnessing a life-changing concert by a band known as the Sex Pistols, he persuades his station to televise one of their performances, and soon Manchester's punk groups are clamoring for him to manage them. Riding the wave of a musical revolution, Wilson and his friends create the legendary Factory Records label and The Hacienda club.
